Welcome to the forums. Overdrive is on when the light on the dash is off. This will give you greater fuel efficiency as it kind of gives you extra gears. With overdrive off the box will only give you standard gears which will mean higher revs and more duel burnt. When overdrive is off you will get a warning light on the dash under the gear indicator telling you that overdrive is off. Only real apllication for overdrive being off would be when going down steep hills to prevent the box being in too high a gear to give you engine breaking.
so general use keep overdrive on. Which means your dash warning light will be off.

By the way I'm from Pembrokeshire Wales :)

Ive had 2 Highway Star's & 2 SGXs....i was told originally when i bought first one years ago from main dealer'importer that it was advisable to just leave the overdrive on all the time...According to them...the overdrive actually goes UP a gear & saves on fuel...Now i;m confused..??
