Thanks for the advice guys. It sounds very much like something has gone awry during fitting of the alternator..
Should there be damaged parts in this area, I then face another struggle to identify and find them (the garage will probably deal the 'dunno guv, it's an import' card). I'm finding the difficulty in getting parts tiring to be honest. Wish I had researched these vehicles before buying. ( )
That's it dropped off at the garage, will report back with their findings..
My mother in law has had her white Hyundai parked behind the Largo the past few days while I was tinkering.. her front bumper and bonnet is now covered in black soot.. oops!
jimmyrev3, the garage are struggling to find the source of the leak, though they haven't spent much time looking yet and want to wash the engine down. If it is one of the components you mentioned previously, are they easily fixed / sourced? I.e common to other Nissans?
hi have seen the oil feed pipe to vacuum pump on ebay.if you are saying oil is leaking by or around sump erea then the oil return pipe from vac pump connects to the sump via a fitting welded to sump,they have probably removed alternator with the vac pump still on it so therefore they have dissconnected feed and return pipe this may be were your oil leak is coming from if it did not have one before.Or maybe they forgot to reconnect the oil feed pipr to vac pump so when engine is running it will be pumping oil straight out .hope this helps you get it sorted
'Elvis' Largo is back. Oil leak was coming from behind the timing belt cover, will have to look at the garage report properly for exact source of leak. Fixed now anyway. Glow plugs were seized in and a nightmare to free up, but have now been replaced. Old crank sensor broke in situ when trying to remove (plastic was brittle) - now out and replaced after a bit of a fight. Engine flushed, oil changed and new oil + filter done. An earth wire behind dash was broken causing the temp gauge fault - now fixed.
All in all, £30 in parts not supplied by me and £450 labour.
So, in 6 weeks of ownership:
New starter motor
New alternator
New crank case sensor
New glow plugs
New oil filter
New fuel filter
Now there is the knocking suspension to think about. I have a set of front top mounts sourced from Amazon US, will look at fitting them at MOT time (September).
Garage man says it's a head turner but a wallet burner! And advises me to quit while I'm ahead..
Yeh, suspension bits seem to be easy enough to get a hold of. I wonder if the knocking from the front is actually the aftermarket induction filter! It isn't secured to anything and could be rattling around in the underbonnet area when going over bumps. I'll try to secure it with tie wraps and see if that helps.
