sounds like they have disturbed temp sensor plug, also there is a little wire that srews to top of alternator i think its an earth may be they left off.As for the burning smell it does sound like belt is not fitted properly or is the wrong size if it was ok before

Had a look at the engine under the passenger seat while running. Can't really get a clear look at the alternator but can see a belt spinning freely and no squeaks or burning smell. Maybe it was 'bedding in'. So, I'm taking the 'replace everything until it's fixed' approach! ;) ps this bus was known as 'Elvis Bus' as the previous owner was an Elvis impersonator by trade.. he had the cold idle issue last year and gave up / sold the bus. Found a couple of rhinestones on the floor that must have fallen off his outfit.. :)))

Ps when it stalls, there's an angry sounding electrical buzz from somewhere - a relay? Hard to tell where it's coming from.

I heard an angry buzz when I shorted out the indicator bulb system and blew a fuse... everything working ok in the lighting department?

Don't anger the Largo dragon ;)

All lighting is fine tttonyyyy, buzzing could be the fuel pump cutting out after stall. Others have suggested problem could either be crank case sensor, or a duff pressure solenoid on top of the fuel pump. No idea where I'd source one of those!

I've taken the plunge and ordered one from Nissan, £106. If that doesn't cure it, along with new glow plugs etc, I may have to accept that the diesel pump is playing up..

..which may not be too bad as there is a Bosch / Zexel specialist in Aberdeen. All makes and models of pumps catered for apparently :)
