Hi all another newby needing some help! Our highway star has been with our mechanic for six weeks now, we've only owned it since beginning of feb! Anyway, we had the starting issue with her, took ages getting it going, after a long time we find it's the fuel pump, someone ha canabalised the wiring loom to bypass poss the immobiliser? Managed to find a pump from breakers for £65. The new pump is on but obviously the immobiliser in the pump won't allow it to start! Any ideas how to get round this?? All advice greatly appreciated.

WHEN YOU SAY IMMOBILISER IN THE PUMP YOU MEAN FUEL STOP SOLENOID, IF YOU TAKE A LIVE WIRE AND TOUCH TOP OF SOLENOID YOU SHOULD HEAR IT CLUNK THAT MEANS ITS WORKING, LEAVE THE WIRE ON AND SEE IF IT STARTS. HAS HE TIMED PUMP UP RIGHT

Can you give a bit more info around this starting issue?

Has he started with the simple stuff like checking glow plugs all work and it cranks at a decent rate, checked fault codes reported by the ECU?

Basically we managed to find timing specs for fuel pump ourselves 9 degrees tdc. The car runs lovely if he takes off a fuel injector then starts it! So it's something in the pump. I have read that they are sort of programmed to the car they are put into?! When we first got her she'd start after a couple of attempts of pumping the key etc, then it went to the battery giving up after too much cranking! We originally thought it was air in the fuel line or glow plugs. We changed plugs as they were running at 20% efficiency at a cost of 200.00. She started first time from cold so we thought that's it done! Nope! Next morning nada! So that's when we took her back in 6 weeks ago!

Another thing is once we got her started she would start on the button every time thereafter? From cold it was a bloody mare?!

Turns out our pump is a single wire so no immobiliser!?? Arghhh where to go from here???!!

It could be an air leak and fuel draining back to the tank overnight. The only way to be sure would be to put clear pipe (8mm ID) on the pump inlet and return and check for bubbles in either in the morning (bit of pain as the seat would need to be removed to check). It could be something as simple as the fuel filter not sealing properly and letting air in - these injection pumps are surprisingly tolerant of a flow of bubbles during running but less so of being drained when standing.

Is the rear of the engine under the pump timing belt wet? Notice any rainbow patterns on the road after you've parked up on a rainy day? Perhaps your pump is leaking fuel out past the shaft seal?

Also as Jimmy says make sure the stop solenoid clonks nicely when 12V is applied, they can break up inside.

And - read the codes - they might reveal something like crankshaft position sensor (also quite capable of causing starting issues).

The Nissan Consult code readers are cheap on eBay, though you need a serial port or a USB to serial adapter to use them.

As tony says could be fuel leaking back or air being drawn in fuel line somewere,check you have power at glow plugs when ignition is turned on it may be relay fault, also if left overnite try this slide drivers seat forward take off panel under carpet above fuel filter then turn on igniton this will turn on fuel stop solenoid then pump hand primer on top of fuel filter then try to start,if it starts better than has been then prob getting air in system

There was nothing flowing back into the system as we tried pumping the fuel pump and it's solid. We initially checked the filters relays etc all fine. The mechanic has just bought a diagnostics kit specifically for our largo so if anyone has problems in lincolnshire go to padley and sons in tattershall haha. Now other pump is on it'll only start if he takes off a fuel injector, but when he puts it back on it will not start, so hoping it's a sensor or chip in the ecu? Also called the hove number which someone posted on here and there's no immobiliser in our type of pump hence why the head butting of walls! I am getting to be quite an expert with largo mechanical failures haha.

just to be sure is your pump manual cable or fly by wire,can you take a pic because i have a primera cd20 injection pump here and i know its in perfect order because it came of my old car before i scrapped it, it is a manually operated cable type with some plugs on it. and it will be solid if ignition isnt on to open solenoid
