High fuel consumption and stalling

Post by bigbob_swindon »

Hi Guys.

I have a 1996 TD Highway Star that is using A LOT of fuel.
I only drive to work and home again which is a total of about 7 miles and ill be using about £20 of fuel every 2 days.
Surely this isn't normal!????

I have had a problem with the bus keeping stalling when I come to a halt and sometime she will really try to lurch forward when held on the foot brake at the lights for example. When she does lurch forward there's puffs of thick black smoke from the exhaust.

Even in park at idle the revs will never settle and the engine just seems to keep hunting.

When I first bought the bus the stalling was REALLY bad ... like every time you came to a stop ... but I made this problem better by replacing the crank sensor. However, the stalling has never completely gone away and now I'm using loads of fuel.

I've done ECU code flash and get the codes pointing at the fuel pump "Fuel quantity adjuster position sensor". I've checked wiring and cant find anything obvious. Cleaned connector plugs and nothing's changed.

Somebody has suggested that I check the timing to ensure that it hasn't slipped ... would this affect MPGs that badly?
If so how do I go about checking this with out having the timing tool for the back of the pump ...or is it possible to use a dial test gauge?

I'm fairly switched on with cars but diesels I'm not so good with and these imports just seem to be way over-complicated for my liking.

Any help or suggestions here would be most appreciated.

This fuel thing is getting to the point where I'm going to have to get rid. I love my bus but it's costing me a fortune.

Thanks Guys.
