Just arrived with a bang
Hi, I've just been given a 'P' Reg Largo 4x4 auto ( yes, given) because the owner had a knock in the engine (diesel) otherwise its very good, a few patches have been welded on the inner sills
but otherwise OK, I think I'm going to have to take the engine out as it sounds like a big end (fine ticking over bit of a knock as you rev it) oil pressure is good (checked with gauge) before I do,
does anyone know if this is common or could it be something else?
If I have to take it to bits has anyone got any torque settings for this engine (or a good S/H engine)
I'm at Bovey Tracey, Devon.
Why was I given it, well he asked me to see if I could sell it for him about Christmas time, we worked out a price and was going to leave it to easter to sell, when he took it to his garage
with the knock they quoted him a lot more than he was hoping to get by selling it. so he walked away from it, good for me.

Missfueling will cause knocking and sound like the bottom end is toast. Ie air leak in fuel lines etc. Does it smoke?

primera p11 engine is the same but you have to swap parts over.

I've removed the engine/gearbox/props (4x4/disconnect from diff, makes the van easier to push around if you need the space) in one lump, not difficult just the weight, tip....drain oil and water first, refit all the nuts/bolts/unions to therir original place as bits are unbolted, take digi photos of the pipework lay out, disconnect all wiring via the connection plugs, it looks like each one is different either in shape or colour so there should'nt be a problem in reconnecting.
I bought a P11 engine off Ebay for £200 and comparing the two it looks like every bolt on bit is different, so everything externally will have to be swopped over. This is the story so far.......

Hey welcome to the club.
I had my engine replaced with a P11 engine. It had to be stripped down to just head and block. Even the oil pump was different.
But good news is it runs well afterwards.
Mine was cam belt went.

The engine is now out and all the bits stripped off, tips for future: the P11 sump is different than the Largo in so much as the two return pipe holes are in different place and it would have been easier to swop these over either before the engine is removed or after the engine has been refitted,also remove the bolts (3) holding the torque convertor to the flywheel when still in situ dont be tempted to pull an automatic gearbox from the engine like you would a manual box leaving the torque convertor still connected to the flywheel or you will have several pints of transmission oil to clean up, the torque convertor must come off with the gearbox.
Problems arising in using a (manual gearboxed) Primera P11 donor engine are 1. trying to get the hex plug out of the block to fit the Largo right angled water pipe (at the back under the turbo) I ended up having to drill this out as it was so tight it just sheared the 10mm hex key, if you have to do this be careful or you could drill into the cylinder side wall.
Biggest problem was getting the torque convertor spigot bush out of the Largo crank as the Primera engine didnt have it, this as about 2 inches in dia with a 3/4 inch hole that the T/C centres on, I ended up mig welding a 12m nut to the steel spigot and screwing in a bolt, this acted as a puller, I had to do it twice as was so tight it pulled the nut off but it eventually came, I then just ground the nut off and tidied up the spigot on the grinder making sure it fitted the locating bit on the T/C before knocking it into the P11 crank.
Timing belts.... I didnt touch the cam belt as it had only recently been changed, I found two web sites showing the belt timing, one saying 43 teeth between the two small marks on the cam and crank wheels (turbo side) and the other saying 41 teeth, as both the engines I counted 43 teeth Im leaving it at that, at TDC on No 1/4 piston the 'D' key holding the crank wheel is to the top, as there dosent seem to be any timing marks for the injector pump timing (beford removing the injector pump from the old engine) I centre punched the gear wheels and hacksawed a mark into the backplate so when dismantled it can be assembled in the same position.
Just about every bolt and stud is different on these engines, also the oil pick up pipe is slightly different shape but the depth looks the same so I will offer up the sump and if theres no interference it will stay.
This is the story so far.

I had to change the oil pump on my P11 engine. Also the shaft seal.
