and can this be done by myself or is this a job for a mechanic to tackle?

Check the lever under the bonnet on the water pipe. Flick it over see if you get hot air .

i bled the coolant system today and have full heat....
cueball posted an amazing step by step .... here's the content.... (sorry cant copy link in my tab)n
by cueball......I have posted these instructions on a post before but I have now dedicated a post to it.
This is the method I use to bleed my Largo. It has never failed me.
It is for the Diesel models but the Petrol is very similar. On the Petrol you will also need to bleed at the engine underneath the drivers seat. Replace the cap if you haven't already as this perishes and causes overheating. There is also a manual summer/winter valve for the Petrol version located under the bonnet. This will need to be opened for bleeding
If you have any leaks then these should be repaired ASAP. They will cause loss of coolant and air locks.
Start off by removing the radiator cap, expansion cap and rubber bung on filler next to expansion tank.
Fill from the filler tube if you can get a hose pipe on here this will make it nice and easy. Just push it in and fill
As you fill up the water will start to come out of the top of the radiator cap. Once there are no bubbles coming out then replace this cap.
Now use the bleed screw at the other side of the radiator. (Only present on plastic top radiator)
The next thing to fill up will be the expansion tank. Fill the water all the way to the top for now so it is overflowing.
Now under the drivers side of the Largo there is a heater matrix for the rear. There will be two short rubber hoses connected to this and between the hoses will be a small rubber bung. Remove this to bleed the rear heater matrix. Remember to keep the level topped up.
Next to the filler tube is the front heater matrix pipework. Two pipes and a small rubber bung between them. Remove this bung to bleed air out.
Now make sure your water is topped up to the brim again.
Go start your engine but don't rev and make sure heat button/knob is off.
Turn on your front heaters and press hot button and hold it until the display reads FH (Full Hot) instead of a temperature. Press RR and do the same for the rear heaters.
Go back to the filler pipe and keep this topped up. You may get some air coming out as the water flows through the engine and pipes.
Replace bung but don't tighten.
Now go rev your engine a bit. Not too much just a few short bursts.
Remove the rubber bung again and top up if needed. Be careful as the water may be HOT now.
Switch off your engine. Replace rubber bung.
This should be your system bled now. You will have to remove some water to put the water level below the max mark. I normally open the rad cap slightly to lower the level. But be careful of HOT water.
Happy Largo'ing

I do however have a new fault if your able to help, I'm now looking for a new / alternative exhaust box as the end has snapped off where the clamp is..any ideas.
