Nissan Largo Friends

Hi all. Just got a Nissan largo 96 diesel .Its a good little van,I was told to drive it with overdrive off,but it is quieter with it on and drives with less revs when on. What way should overdrive be, on or off.Also what is the fan under the engine for and should their be a cover on it.Where is the best place to get an air filter for this van, as cannot find one.

Most people leave them on full time as I do,the fan under engine is for when to much heat builds up under engine cover fan should come on to blow out heat also there should be two plastic covers under engine and box,Air filter ebay £18.88
