Largo Over heating and cutting out

Hello everyone.
I own a 1998 Highway Star 2.4 ltr petrol engine . Recently it has started to overheat , and loses power after about 20 minutes of driving.
It started up from cold nicely and would drive well for the first few minutes..eventually it would start to stutter and then eventually stop when it was left to tick over. This problem would get progressively worse over a few days, I checked the obvious, water and oil, no warning lights lights lit up the dashboard.
so I took it to a garage who changed the ignition coil , then they replaced the spark leads and completed a compression test to test the head gasket and the cylinders .....but now they cant start the engine at all...they have even bypassed the fuel system to try and get the engine started ...with no results...
Does any one have any suggestions as they have tried everything they can think off and are about to put it all back together and hand me back an unusable largo.
