New owner needing some help

So after at least a year or two of admiring and lusting after a Largo I finally managed to snag myself one
Got myself a 4wd 2.0l Turbo Diesel N Reg. Looks in cracking condition outside and in, few age marks but always to be expected.
I got it for pretty cheap but bought with an overheating problem.
Couldn't make the 20 minute drive from the purchase house back to my house, ended up being trucked back by the AA.
So, the over heating problem, here's what the last owner told me about it, 'the engine has a problem with overheating the car doesn't steam from the exhaust and there is no oil contamination in the coolant or coolant in the oil. I have noticed when it does overheat the heaters blow hot and cold (* I've only ever felt them blow cold *) and parts of the radiator stay cold and some parts hot. I have been told that with these symptoms its possibly a water pump or blocked hose or radiator but i am really not sure'
After speaking in depth with the AA bloke and reading for what feels like 3 years of different posts on here (THANK YOU) I think first port of call is Thermostat, take it out stick it in boiling water and see if it opens. If not, Water pump? Need a new one perhaps? Or possibly a blockage in the radiator, can get a new one for 90 quid so not too bad. AA did a gasket test (which he said aren't 100% accurate) but that came up saying it was fine. He said he thought someone has added sealant to the system which worried him?
Am I missing anything or perhaps try something different?
Whilst this was going on steam bellowing out from the bonnet the check engine light came on. Im praying to high heaven that is just because of the serious overheating? Hopefully not a separate problem, the beauty was cheap but hopefully haven't been screwed over completely.
Also, the accelerator felt strange, the change of just a few mm movements felt like MASSIVE power increase. Do they just have a lot of power kicking about ready to go or is this a gearbox problem perhaps? Doubt it would have anything to do with overheating too.
And finally!...the speedo was a bit all over the place, was reading 0mph when I was doing at least 15mph and the petrol (diesel) gauge barely moved from empty after putting £20 worth of diesel in it...does it just have a massive tank?
Thanks in advance for any pointers what so ever. Hopefully I'll have her up and running soon and be able to take it for a decent drive and show off to my mates! Even two miles would be nice! Haha
Sorry for the essay post!
Thanks!
Michael
