Recon engines

I have spent two weeks trying to buy a decent 2nd hand engine or a recon and have dealings with cowboys - I have to sue one of them.
Any recommendations, from your experiences, of a reputable firm I can approach.
I am pretty desparate and will be grateful for advice.
