Hello all.

New to the forum. let me 1st introduce myself.
From the Uk. driving a 1996 largo highway star all silver
was driving good until recently when i noticed the heaters go cold, and it started to overheat :o :o , couldnt believe it. so i pulled over and let it cool, after a while started it again and took off the radiator cap and started it up, what i saw was the coolant was flowing out of the top, not like a tap but it was coming out after about 2seconds, once revved it increased, i've no coolant mixing in oil, no smoke, and no misfire, I've heard a lot about HG & thermostats and of course the airlock. Now how could i get the air out of the cooling system, & where is the thermostat on the engine. it does start ok everyday without any hesitation. wondering what it could be. I bought it off a guy who told me that it overheats "sometimes" recenty drove 70miles and the temp needle was fluctuating, higher than normal. heaters still cold. please help dont know what it could be??

great stuff thx.

i've got this other issue i've got oil dripping down running of the gearbox!!?? c

cant understand where its coming from, when i raised the passenger seat to check the engine i can see it slightly covered in oil, the top cam cover is really wet with oil and oil moisture is on the pipe coming off the top of the engine,

i've heard the cam cover could start leaking but would that trail down to the gearbox? or is it the gearbox leaking.
when i get under if i see small patches of oil directly under the cam cover and under the gearbox

Smell the patches, dip your finger in ;-) 2 distinct smells between transmission and engine oil.+ engine oil from a diesel will be jet black.
Theres your answer, hot oil can get pretty much anywhere.

Thermostat is under drivers seat to the right as you look at the engine. Easy enough to replace but use red/blue gasket sealant, sounds like it might be sticking closed.

It's that or your water pump isn't circulating properly?

I've removed the thermostat completely so water is circulating all the time. I have no issues now.
Oil leak wise check all pipes and check oil filter is tight and has the rubber seal present.
I recently purchased a new one and didn't have the seal. What a mess!
