It's the starter motor and alternator. I can get the starter motor on ebay for £195, minus £30 exchange, but there seems to be different alternators available. Will have to make sure I buy the right one!

Well, after a new starter motor, alternator, battery, rocker cover gasket, and oil and fuel filters, the bus is running great. Except that the engine temperature gauge doesn't move any more, even after a lengthy run. Back to the garage, dammit! :(

Now a burning smell from the heater vents. Jeez, these buses are slightly unreliable aren't they?

Well, the bus is going back into the garage next week. New starter motor plus alternator cured my starting woes, only to be replaced with some more niggles. Temperature gauge won't budge, engine very lumpy on idle to the point of cutting out. Will put in new glow plugs and clean the air separator next. If that makes no difference, I'll turn my attention to the MAF and crank case sensor.

Re the burning smell, this has occurred only after fitting a new alternator belt. Maybe it needs adjusted or the pulley has gone, not sure.

I take back my comment re these buses being unreliable. I'm sure they are, if they are serviced properly and regularly. I don't think this one has been, but it'll be worth fixing up :)
